Understand the Job
When you were a child, you may have wanted to become a vet. Perhaps you thought doing so just consisted of putting a stethoscope on a dog or cat’s chest. In reality, it’s far more advanced than that. Study the Appropriate Subjects
Before studying to be a vet, many individuals will have to have excellent knowledge of subjects like animal psychology, biology, business, chemistry, communications, and physics. Some of these are about treating animals, while the others are about how to successfully practice as a local vet.
Get an Undergraduate Degree
Veterinary schools tend to like it if the individual has a degree in specific subjects like pre-veterinary medicine, animal science, biology, and zoology. Once an individual gets their degree, they can apply to veterinary schools.
Attend Veterinary School
This is the biggest step since an aspiring vet will need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to be able to practice as a vet. It’s a very exclusive title! They will likely have to attend vet school for four years. During the first three, they will be in a classroom setting, and then in the fourth one, they will be doing rotations. These schools will have licensed veterinarians teaching and guiding students during those rotations where they start working with animals.
After graduating from vet school, they will have to pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination in the state that they want to practice. Once they pass, they’ll do an internship or residency before they can practice on their own. Then they’re a vet!
